Spring cleaning is an annual ritual in almost all American households. But fall cleaning is fast becoming an essential custom. Many experts say doing a deep cleaning helps keep people healthier during winter.
Doing a dining room fall cleaning is critical. Your dining room is often considered the center of the home. This is where you spend quality time with your family over meals. It’s also where you host Thanksgiving dinner and other holiday shenanigans.
Cleaners for hire will do short work of the cleaning. But you can also take on the job yourself. Here are the steps you can follow:
Start by Decluttering
It’s not unusual to have some clutter in your home. One survey revealed six percent of Americans describe their homes as very cluttered. Meanwhile, 21 percent say their homes are a bit cluttered. Regardless of where you fall in that spectrum, decluttering is always a must.
Get a basket or box. Put all the stuff you find on the tables or sideboards in it. You can deal with them later. If you want, you can even have three boxes. One each for items you’ll keep, throw, and donate.
Dust Away
A good rule of thumb when cleaning is to start at the highest point of the room. Get a soft-bristled broom or vacuum and dust the ceiling. You should then move your way down. From the ceiling, move to the vents and lighting fixtures. You should then dust the windows, blinds, and walls.
Get a clean rag or dusting mitt and wipe down the crown moldings. Don’t forget to wipe away the dust on top of the cabinets. You can then move your attention to decorative items like vases and photos. Make sure you also wipe the baseboards.
Clear the Cabinets
Take out everything, from the good china to the silverware. Wipe and disinfect every shelf. Wash or wipe clean every item before you place them back inside.
Wash Silverware and Flatware
It’s also a great idea to wash the silverware and other dishes while you’re doing the deep cleaning. Doing this now means you won’t have to do it when preparing Thanksgiving dinner. Don’t like doing the dishes? Ask your housekeeper to include it in the residential cleaning chores she’s doing.
Cleaning silverware isn’t rocket science. Put them in an aluminum baking pan. Add hot water and baking soda. Let it soak for a bit before rinsing. It will look good as new.
Focus on the Dining Table and Chairs
Remove all the items on the dining table. Spray the surface with a cleaning solution and wipe it clean. Scrub off any gunk or stain. You can do another round of wiping and polishing. Follow it up with a good disinfectant. Let it air dry. Wipe the centerpiece and place it back. Wipe down the chairs. Make sure you also clean the legs and underneath the seat.
Many independent house cleaners recommend setting the table. It’s one way to prevent clutter as it reduces open space.
Finish by Cleaning the Floor
The floor should be the last thing to become cleaned. Sweep wood or tile floors. Follow it up with a mopping. Do a thorough job of vacuuming. Move the furniture out of the way if you can.
